Ares God of War's Battles

Ares personifies the noise, bloodshed, fear, and physical force of battle. Greek epic often contrasts him with Athena’s strategy, but both can take part in war and both support favored sides.

Ares in Greek battle stories in the surviving tradition

In the Iliad, Ares fights for the Trojans until Athena guides Diomedes’ spear into him. He roars and withdraws to Olympus. Later he returns to the fighting and is struck down again when Athena hurls a stone. The scenes make divine warfare look enormous but also comic and unstable.

Texts, objects, and evidence

Ares is father of Phobos and Deimos, Fear and Terror, who accompany battle. Harmonia, daughter of Ares and Aphrodite, embodies a different outcome of their union. In Thebes, the slain dragon associated with Ares produces the Spartoi from its teeth, while Cadmus serves Ares and marries Harmonia.

Key points

  • Aloadae: The giants Otus and Ephialtes imprison Ares in a bronze jar until Hermes rescues him.
  • Heracles: Heracles wounds Ares in some stories and kills his son Cycnus, showing repeated conflict between hero and war god.
  • Athens: Ares is tried for killing Halirrhothius in an origin story for the Areopagus court.
  • Mars: Roman Mars is not merely a renamed Ares. Roman state cult gives him broader civic and ancestral importance.

How to read the material

Being defeated in a myth does not make an immortal god dead or powerless. The scenes express relationships and narrative values, not a permanent hierarchy.
