Set, also written Seth, was one of the most changeable figures in ancient Egyptian religion. He was associated with deserts, storms, disorder, force, and foreign lands, but calling him only an evil god erases important parts of his history.
Set in Egyptian religion
In royal and temple traditions, Set could represent dangerous strength placed in the service of order. Texts and images show him defending the solar god Ra against the serpent Apophis during the sun god’s nightly voyage. Several kings adopted names honoring Set, especially during the Ramesside period.
Set’s best-known conflict belongs to the Osiris cycle. He kills Osiris and later contests the throne with Horus. Surviving versions disagree about many details, including how the conflict is judged and how the rivals are reconciled. The story concerns succession and legitimate rule as much as a simple contest between good and evil.
Changing reputation
Attitudes toward Set varied by place and period. He had established cult centers and royal support, yet later sources increasingly linked him with hostile outsiders and cosmic disorder. That later hostility should not be projected onto every earlier period. His unusual animal form also remains uncertain rather than securely identified with one living species.
