Atalanta is one of the leading women heroes of Greek myth, known for hunting, speed, and resistance to marriage. Ancient sources disagree about her parentage and combine episodes in different ways. These variations may reflect more than one regional Atalanta tradition.
The Calydonian boar hunt
Atalanta joins the heroes summoned to kill the boar sent by Artemis against Calydon. In a common account, she draws first blood with an arrow. Meleager then kills the animal and awards her its hide. His uncles object to a woman receiving the prize, leading to a family conflict that ends in Meleager’s death.
Some lists also put Atalanta among the Argonauts, while Apollonius says Jason refused to take her because her presence among men might cause conflict. It is therefore inaccurate to state her Argonaut status without naming the version.
The footrace
To avoid marriage, Atalanta requires suitors to beat her in a race, with death as the price of failure. Hippomenes, also called Melanion in some sources, receives three golden apples from Aphrodite. He drops them during the race, and Atalanta pauses to collect them, allowing him to win.
The couple later offend a deity by having sex in a sacred place and are changed into lions. The offended deity and exact setting vary. Atalanta’s independence and contested ending can be compared with Bellerophon’s tests and Icarus’s fatal limit.
