Saraswati is a Hindu goddess of speech, knowledge, learning, music, and the arts. Her history reaches back to Vedic texts, where Sarasvati is also a river and a divine power of inspired speech.
River and sacred speech
Vedic hymns praise Sarasvati as a mighty river and a source of strength and inspiration. Over time, her identity became increasingly connected with Vac, sacred speech, and with the ordered knowledge needed for ritual and learning.
Later Hindu traditions commonly present Saraswati with a veena, manuscript or book, prayer beads, and a white lotus. A swan or goose often serves as her vehicle. White clothing and clear water express purity and disciplined understanding.
Worship and relationships
Saraswati is widely honored by students, musicians, writers, and teachers. Vasant Panchami is a major occasion for her worship in many regions, though practices vary across India and beyond.
She is often described as the partner of Brahma, but divine relationships and theological emphasis differ among texts and communities. Saraswati also appears in Jain and Buddhist traditions under forms shaped by those religions. A single family chart cannot represent all of these histories.
