Lightning Strikes at Tubondo
In an explosive display of divine intervention, Mwindo, the epic hero of the Nyanga people, summons Nkuba, the lightning god, to rain celestial fire upon Tubondo village. Through Mwindo’s powers, seven blazing streaks of lightning initially miss Tubondo but strike true on his second call, reducing the village and its people to dust.
Yet this destruction isn’t the end – it’s a catalyst for transformation. Mwindo uses his magic to breathe life back into the villagers and rebuilds Tubondo from the ashes. His father Shemwindo, who once sought Mwindo’s death, flees underground but can’t escape destiny. With the help of a friends, Mwindo captures Shemwindo, and the cycle is complete: the father acknowledges his son, chains become forgiveness, and destruction leads to rebirth. Under Mwindo’s wise rule, Tubondo rises anew. Four percussion players accompany the bard as he dramatically recounts this tale of destruction and redemption.
Battles in the Dark Below
The journey spans the dark passages of the underworld, where Mwindo must pass the spirit guardians of the dead. He descends to the realm of the dead and faces the trials of Muisa, the keeper of the ancestors, with courage and wisdom. Through his cunning and his sacred medicines, Mwindo overcomes each obstacle and emerges from the underworld reborn, carrying the blessings of the ancestors back to the world of the living.
