Baosheng Dadi, the Great Emperor Who Protects Life, is a healing deity with especially strong devotion in Fujian and Taiwan. Tradition identifies him with Wu Tao, also called Wu Ben, a healer associated with the Song period. Historical memory and miracle stories are closely joined in his cult, but they should not be reported as equally documented events.
From healer to deity
Accounts describe Wu as a skilled physician who treated rich and poor and understood medicinal plants. After his death, communities honored him for cures and protection. Imperial titles granted in later periods helped establish the name Baosheng Dadi.
Miracle tales expand his power beyond ordinary medicine. He may cure severe illness, control harmful beings, or save rulers. A famous animal story has him heal a tiger after removing an obstruction from its throat. Versions differ, and the tiger often becomes a guardian in temple imagery.
Temple networks
Migration carried the worship of Baosheng Dadi from coastal Fujian to Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Temples became centers for ritual, festivals, charity, and community ties as well as requests for health. The tradition continues beside professional medical care rather than serving as a historical account of clinical practice.
His healing office can be compared with Shennong’s association with medicinal plants and Guanyin’s compassionate aid. Their histories and forms of worship remain distinct.
