Yue Lao, the Old Man under the Moon, is a Chinese deity of marriage and destined meetings. He is known for joining future couples with a cord, usually described in modern retellings as red. The bond may stretch or tangle, but fate eventually draws the linked people together.
The Tang tale
The best-known early story concerns a traveler named Wei Gu. At night he meets an old man consulting a book of marriages and carrying cords used to bind destined spouses. The old man identifies a poor young girl as Wei Gu’s future wife. Wei Gu rejects the prediction and orders an attack, yet years later he discovers that his bride is the same person, marked by the earlier injury.
The story is morally uncomfortable because Wei Gu’s violence is not romantic. Careful retelling should not hide it. The point of the tale is the old man’s knowledge of an outcome that human status and intention cannot prevent.
Marriage fate, not a Greek copy
Yue Lao is sometimes called a Chinese Cupid for quick comparison, but the roles are not equal. He keeps marriage records and arranges bonds in a bureaucratic image of fate. Cupid or Eros belongs to a different literary and religious history.
