Dayu, or Yu the Great, is the culture hero who brings China’s great flood under control. Tradition contrasts his work with that of his father Gun, whose efforts failed. Yu succeeds by directing water through channels and rivers rather than trying only to block it.
Labor across the land
Stories say Yu travels for years to survey mountains, open waterways, and drain the plains. A famous detail has him pass his own doorway three times without entering because the work cannot wait. The image makes persistence and public duty the center of his character.
Some accounts add supernatural help or a changed body marked by exhausting labor. Later political tradition makes Yu the founder of the Xia dynasty and a model ruler who earned authority through service. The geographic scheme called the Nine Provinces also became attached to his ordering of the land.
History, flood, and memory
Geologists and archaeologists have studied evidence for severe prehistoric floods in China. A major flood can help explain why flood memory remained powerful, but it does not by itself prove every detail about Yu or settle the dates and status of the Xia dynasty. Mythic narrative, transmitted history, and physical evidence answer different questions.
Yu’s achievement is best read with Shennong’s agricultural teaching and Nüwa’s repair of the sky. Each account turns control of danger into a foundation for human order.
